Tim's suggestion is good and it should fix the problem. But if you want to avoid the authencation probelm. You can use virtual SMTP server inside your IIS to send the email for you. This way you don't need to rely on another email server. The trick is you will need to grant the relay restriction for one particular server (for example 192.168.0.100, usually your web server IP), then <!--SENDMAIL SERVER=192.168.0.100 ..... --> should work.
