You could certainly put data in the calendar day boxes that is selected from a database: You would just put the query and display code inside the calendar generation loop so it gets executed for each day. Or you could make the day links go to a script that queries events for the given date. (The second method is the way I've used the function, which is why it provides a parameter for a URL to link to. Each day in the calendar boxes will have a link to that URL with the date added to the end.)
